In the summer of 2022, I experienced the loss of several loved ones for the first time. The series of paintings that followed was my process of grief and my search for hope during that difficult season.
The first painting “Migrant” expresses the feeling of transition. The loss of certain people meant many changes in my family’s life. Suddenly it seemed the ‘good times’ were over and we were wondering what was next. Through the struggle of emotions, I held on to my faith and knowing that there was good and purpose in it even though I did not see it. That magenta string of hope is depicted in each painting as I weaved through the ever changing blue hues.
“Endurance” was the second piece. More tragedies came into our lives and I felt a desperation within me to not give up. To hold on despite the waves crashing in. The horse in this painting is more transparent- vulnerable but strong. Head low, but straining forward.
Life continued to bring changes but the trials began to produce growing pains and “Stronger” became the third painting in the series. The journey was not lightening its load, but it was starting to get easier to walk it. And finally there was “Dawning.” A new chapter in my life was beginning. I did not know what that new chapter would bring, but I have chosen to step into it with confidence and hope. Choosing faith day by day no matter what comes.
